2016 Outcross Sires

2016 Mares Covered by Outcross Sires

by David Cowl

When the Report on Mares Bred is published I take a look to see how the North American based outcross sires fared during the breeding season.

I break things down into three categories based on the number of mares covered: Group 1 (100 or more), Group 2 (50 - 99) and Group 3 (25 - 49).

Here's how they fared in 2016.

Group 1:
Animal Kingdom -153
Tiznow - 128

Group 2:
Mizzen Mast - 75
Include - 72
Field Commission - 68
Big Drama - 67
Einstein - 65

Group 3:
Aikenite - 46
Slew's Tiznow - 39
Hat Trick - 38
Lewis Michael - 34
Giacomo - 32
Milwaukee Brew - 31
Musketier - 31
Skipshot - 29
Early Flyer - 27
Orientate - 27
Redeemed - 26

Southern Image (21) and Kafwain (20) came close to making the list. The rest were "up the track or distanced".

Observations - Good to see that Einstein got some support with the move to California. Aikenite was a surprise. Musketier and Skipshot are holding their own.

Update December 7, 2016:
A few days after posting the above, Skipshot had his first black-type stakes winner when Chance of Luck won the $100,000 Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.
Chance of Luck (USA)gr/r c 2014 21-a (Wagtail) Skipshot x Winning Chance by Alphabet Soup is now undefeated in two starts.  Kentucky Derby dark horse?
Winning Chance (CAN) gr/r m 1999 Alphabet Soup x Winning Spurs by Buckley Boy was a stellar race mare here in Canada.  Her record was 22-7-8-2 with earnings of $651,000.
She won the Ontario Damsel and Bell Mahone Stakes at Woodbine.
Hopefully more breeders start to take notice of what's available on the list.
