Bradley Blood

Sometimes patterns not immediately apparent in pedigrees come together to work considerable magic. But how do we identify and connect these patterns and where do we begin?

Well, one way is knowing something about the major breeders of our time. We simply cannot begin to count the number of times we have seen a build up of “Bradley blood” (note the two “B”‘s!) in some of our better horses.

Just comparing a very few horses bred by Bradley, or having a large concentration of his blood (it’s easy in most cases, just follow the “B”‘s), can be very revealing.  Take the case of Buckpasser’s dam Busanda and the good sire Better Self, found in the pedigree of Dr. Fager.

When you look at their pedigrees on top of each other, we find *La Troienne x2; War Admiral x2; Black Servant/Black Toney x2; North Star III x2/Ben Brush x3; and Padua x 3.

Then compare the pedigrees of Belle of Troy, dam of Cohoes, and the full sisters Be Faithful (second dam of Never Bend) and Bimlette (dam of No Robbery). This time, we find *La Troienne x2; Blue Larkspur x2; Cyllene x3; St. Angelo x3.

Be Faithful/Bimlette are also fascinating with Better Self: Here we have Bimelech x2/Black Servant x2; North Star III x2; Cyllene x3; Ben Brush x3.

Now consider Glaive, a half sister to Damascus’s dam Kerala, matched against Baby League, ancestress of any number of good horses including Private Account and Woodman. Here we have *La Troienne x2/Beaming Beauty x2/ and North Star III x2.

Just as we showed you the build-up in various lines at Claiborne Farm, here we see something similar in the Bradley-breds.  And one of the best, which we have profiled in Pedlines on more than one occasion, is California stallion Cutlass Reality.

This horse fascinates us on any number of levels, which is why we have discussed him several times – there is a lot to talk about. Consider his Bradley contribution: Belle of Troy; Bimelech; Bubbling Over x3/Bar Nothing; Buginarug; Baba Kenny.  That is no less than eight crosses of important Bradley-breds!

One example not enough for you? How about Private Account, sire of Personal Ensign?  This wonderful sire had Buginarug; Blue Larkspur x3; Breakfast Bell; Beaming Beauty; Businesslike; Baby League and Bubbling Over. That’s nine crosses of the magic “B”‘s.

Even a horse like Lear Fan has a Bradley story to tell. He is Blue Larkspur x2/Baba Kenny. Those crosses result in Black Servant/Black Toney x3/North Star III x3/Padua x5, which translates to a very large Bradley influence.

We would be remiss not to mention current two-year-old sensation More Than Ready. Looks pretty simple at first blush, doesn’t he?  Lots of Native Dancer and *Nasrullah. Sire x2 Almahmoud; dam x 4 *La Troienne.  Then take a little closer look and find the following: Blue Larkspur x4/*La Troienne x4/Bubbling Over x2/Padua x7/North Star III x6. Incidentally, this fellow is from the same branch of *La Troienne as Cutlass Reality.  His second dam, Becky Be Good, is a half sister to Landera, dam of Cutlass Reality. Pretty intriguing, isn’t it?

We all know the stories about Bradley being an inveterate gambler, but there is no game of chance in compiling his better bloodlines. They’re pretty close to a sure thing.
